There have been 98 murders in Chicago since January 1st. Click HERE for more info...

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Authorities found the bodies of five young people Wednesday inside a ransacked house on Chicago's South Side, raising the body count in an already violent spring, police said.

Neighbors watch investigators comb a South Side house that is Chicago's latest homicide scene.

It appeared the three men and two women had been shot, but investigators were waiting for the Cook County medical examiner's office to confirm a cause of death, said Chief of Detectives Thomas Byrne. Autopsies were scheduled for Thursday, the medical examiner's office said.

"This is very serious," Byrne said at a news conference near the two-story house. "There's five victims. There's five families right now that are grieving over this."

All the victims were in their 20s, and they all knew each other, said Deputy Chief Eugene Williams. There were signs of forced entry into the house, which appeared to have been ransacked, Williams said.

A woman visiting the house found the bodies Wednesday afternoon, police spokeswoman Monique Bond said.

Police did not have offenders in custody but did not believe a random killer was on the loose, Bond said. It was possible the victims knew the offender, she said.

"We don't think that the neighbors need to worry," she said. "We believe that it's been contained inside this residence."

Police declined to comment on whether the scene was a murder-suicide.
They cordoned off a section of the residential street as neighbors milled around, talked in groups and watched.

Vanessa Mathis, whose mother lives across the street, said the neighborhood has many older residents and is not a crime-ridden area.

"We've never had anything like this to happen before," Mathis said.

The discovery comes on the heels of a spate of violence in Chicago. Nine people died in 36 shootings over the past weekend. Video Watch a police official make a plea for help »

One man died and three others were wounded, including one of the alleged offenders, in shootings late Monday in a McDonald's restaurant parking lot on the South Side.

The recent violence followed a six-month period during which more than 20 Chicago public school students were shot to death.

Recently, nothing makes my heart hurt like listening to world news, or hearing about problems like this in my home country while I'm in Japan. U.S. stand up. There are much bigger issues in the world, I know, but we first gotta take care of the world we know.

What's going on? This is madness. My brother drives trucks and he was telling me Sunday night about this event. It's a cruel world. I have family in Chicago. This hits very close to home. Oh my, I feel for the families. I know what they are going threw. There is nothing more definite than death. There has to be a solution. People don't value life anymore. They were somebodies sisters, brothers, cousins, uncles daughters and sons. I am my brothers keeper!

It is sad, that my man who was the first to post a comment is right ... Kanye, let you have dropped a new song, new sneakers, or even Artwork for your music, comments would be flooded. I'm familiar with this because I'm from NY and we are really angry (Black Ppl and all other races) about Sean Bell's murderer's verdict and, I heard the Chi- towns mayor is mad grimey. WAKE UP everyone!

THANK YOU Kanye for bringing this up. I commented about it a while and was surprised that you hadn't talked about it yet. Young Americans are having a war in the streets, but nobody can win. Talk about "Child Rebel Soldier" it's like "Little Weapon" is happening at home. It's not just in other countries that young boys and men are handed guns and told to fight.
lex_lightning | April 29, 2008
man this is all a product of the economy and the poor conditions people are put through, all this tension and shit. its terrible all this murdering, I dont know the answer but something has to be done.
honestly chicago to be, being a detroiter is like my brother, I love that city and it really hurts to see violence spark up in both those cities, although I know detroit already has a bad reputation, it dosn't change the value of the human lives within it.
it has to stop.
rowan_rashard | April 29, 2008
rising violence and these people still talkin bout guns and drugs????true madness
AspiringMC | April 29, 2008
Was this a murder suicide? December 06' my best friend boyfriend shot her five times and then killed himself. We had just had a ball at the Bayou Classics, me not knowing that would be our last trip. I can't do controllers or abusers, I am sorry. Things escalate fast and relationships fall apart.

This is a difficult topic to deal with. To list some:
First, the main problem is the lack of education and thus the lack of a serious job.
Second, there is the crime mentality in minority neighborhoods. By this, I mean the fanfare that comes with being the tough drug dealer who shoots people. I'm not sure how much of this still is shown in rap, but back in the day, this type of glorification was rampant.
Third, there is a lack of trust when it comes to police enforcement. The ops are not bad all the time, and not everything is related to race. If I were a cop in a dangerous neighborhood, I would be looking out for my own safety.
These issues are not easy to solve and require long term solutions. Better education, job placement, a strong handed police crack down on guns, and also some give on the part of the community.
At least in some of these places, the cops actually try. In some places in Mexico, the narcos run everything and the cops are helpless.

The violence in America is horrible. It is a serious problem. 1 Billion people in the world live in extreme poverty without access to food or water. In India they find bags full of aborted female fetuses floating down drains because a dowry costs too much money. Millions of people are starving to death in North Korea just like in the 1999 famine.
Kanye, you have the power to do something about the violence in Chicago. What couldn’t be accomplished with you’re fans and colleagues. Besides, you know people need leaders. Don’t be still.
ciara1989 | April 29, 2008
I will never understand why buy a gun is legaly in US..even if it's not the origin of the problem...It's a wrench to see the distress on the face of these people..When you grow up,you become aware of the cruelty of the life and you become pessimistic..In France, violence is more and more existing and the future scared me about this..For example, racisim is still existing even if things have been changing.."Life is good"..and Hard

im sad and it's sorry to here but to be honest that's everywhere. cause where im at it's even worse i live in baltimore md, and it's so terrible out here i think we might have had over 98 in the last couple weeks that have passed. but the only thing you can do is pray and do what you feel you need to do to make a change and if that dosen't work at least you can say you tried, but alway's try to stay on a bright side if there is one, and look at some things we can do.
Crystal | April 29, 2008
This is so sad,and it reminds me of what is going on in D.C.I don't have children yet,and i'm afraid to bring a child into this world with all of this madness going on.Something has got to give, because the black male will be extinct due to violence, and the black female due to aids.
Reek_The_Geek | April 29, 2008
i guess we back on some '03 sh*t...
i believe that was the year we were the murder capital..

Wow.....was this post a downer or WHAT!?!?
The good news...is that EACH of us AS individuals are capable of making a difference on WHATEVER scale we choose. It can be as small as donating a buck to a local charitable orginization or as BIG as creating a foundation to aide in our communities. The capacity at which we are ABLE to give to, create for or effect our society depends entirely on what you as an individual feel is possible. Don't EVER sit back and feel that bc you can't make a big difference that you might as well do nothing at all.
WE ARE THE CHANGE WE SEEK....
Ye is a smart Kid...I'm sure he knows that there is genocide in africa and starving children all over the world, but I could understand how he feels close to this.
Thanks for the post Kanye....I'm sure it has caused many people to think but more importantly serves as a reminder to act!
MissLilKanYe08 | April 29, 2008
i think that the entertainment industry(especially those in hip hop) need to get together and take a stand against violence and especially violence amongst young people. Its ridiculous that so many die young because they living the wrong lifestyle or they are in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nowhere is safe anymore. Schools, work, church, stadiums,-there's no where you can go and feel safe enough to not panic or be scared for ya life. So like i said, they people who can reach out to the most people at once and really get through people's heads are the people in the industry and i think its not only your jobs to try to put an end to this reckless violence but its also our jobs as fans to join yall. Thats if you do it...

As we move into the future there seems to be a growing overall lack of value for human life. I wish more people would show restrain, common sense and/or tolerance so that we can have a more peaceful existence. I am sadden and fearful of the moral state of society today.

I admired the fact that a celebrity of your level still shows concern for the community and people where you come from. hope others can be so conscious and make efforts to assist by using their celebrity.

effie127 | April 29, 2008
The basic problems of the world all roots from the constant struggle between bettering the community and bettering the individual. The "ghettos" are the "ghettos" for a reason. When the goverment stops caring about uplifting the community people then are often forced to rely on themselves as individuals which is why we have drug dealing, organized crime etc. It seems selfish but when someone has to go home and feed their kids at night, and they need quick cash this is sadly the option most choose. I don't condone dope-dealing and murder; in fact, I believe that as easy as it to go that route I'm willing to work it out the hard way because I won't compromise my dignity, plus I know God will always make a way. People really just need to educate themselves, and stop falling into the traps set up for people in urban communities to fail. It's a tougher road, and we may not see all the results we want even in our lifetime, but we must leave something for the future generations!

oh and many people are pointing at hip-hop but changing hip-hop won't change the community, changing the community will change hip-hop (heard someone on BET say that gotta give proper credit)

Yo , this is not just a problem in the Chi, its' a problem in EVERY major city in America! Trust me. I live in a suburb outside of Philly, yet all I hear is the same thing , murders everyday. I don't know what it's gonna take for people to stop killing each other, from NY to LA, from Chi to St. Louis, from Philly to the ATL. Things are getting ridiculous. We need some major changes in our country, I want to see our generation prosper.
