Story Via Boston Herald:
Passion Pit and the pendulum
He’s just 21, but Michael Angelakos has seen it all before.
He’s seen the blog-buzz-band-explodes/blog-buzz-band-implodes thing repeat itself enough times to want to avoid it.
The Internet hipster cabal recently picked Angelakos’ band Passion Pit - which headlines the Middle East in Cambridge Friday - to be the next big thing. But like a Human League song come true, the fickle online harpies always make sure you don’t forget they put you where you are now, and they can put you back down, too.
“It’s something I’m completely freaked out about,” Angelakos said from a tour van somewhere between Pontiac, Mich., and Chicago. “But I don’t think this is the typical buzz-band project. The LP is so remarkably different from the EP. The new record (due in May) is kind of like,
‘Whoa, what is this all about?’ ”
The Boston band’s old record is “Chunk of Change,” a six-song EP of outstanding synth pop reminiscent of fellow hot-stuff kids MGMT.
What began as a Valentine’s Day gift for Angelakos’ now ex-lady friend in 2007 became a sonic calling card that attracted some choice label attention: Passion Pit signed with Frenchkiss Records and has an international distribution deal with Columbia. The love didn’t last, but the music - written and recorded by Angelakos on his own - is worth keeping.
“The EP was not even meant to be released,” said Angelakos, who’s dropped out of Emerson College to record and tour. “But more and more blogs started picking up on it and it turned into this.”
This is an Internet hit and tour where 200 people who hadn’t heard of the band a few months ago packed a tiny club in Pontiac on a Monday. That’s just the tip of the Passion Pit iceberg.
The new record has a good shot at breaking the band nationally. Produced in New York, the still-untitled album was made with a big band budget - big, that is, in the MGMT sense. There are fancy flourishes like string sections and a children’s choir from P.S. 22 on Staten Island.
